When fear feels overwhelming, this simple practice can save you and supercharge your productivity.

Why Gratitude Is Your Ultimate Reset Button

A few years ago, I woke up paralyzed by fear—fear of failure and fear of judgment overwhelmed me to the point where I could not get much done. My to-do list mocked me, and every unchecked task deepened my frustration. That’s when I discovered the hidden power of gratitude.

As Tony Robbins puts it:

“Gratitude is the antidote to the two things that stop us: fear and anger. Fear is why we don’t take action, and anger is why we get stuck. You can’t be grateful and angry simultaneously. You can’t be fearful and grateful simultaneously. So it’s really the reset button.”

Those words hit me like a lightning bolt. I heard them for the first time as I was passively listening to motivational videos on YouTube. I knew I had to hit that reset button—and fast.

Inspired but that moment of realization, I put myself on a gratitude challenge and I haven’t looked back since. Over the years, I have watched how this habit of gratitude has changed my life in the most beautiful ways.

Daily Gratitude Practices: Journaling, Speaking, and Sharing

To cultivate a lifelong habit of gratitude, there are some easy daily practices you can adopt.

1. Keep a Gratitude Journal

Journaling is a powerful wellness tool; gratitude journaling takes it a step further. Spend 5 minutes each morning writing three new things you’re grateful for. Anything goes—from “I woke up on time” to “I hit my first sales goal.” Over time, your journal becomes a reservoir of positivity you can revisit on tough days.

How to Keep a Gratitude Journal You’ll Actually Use

  • Choose your format. A dedicated gratitude journal like this one, a notebook, or a section in your daily journal works fine.
  • Be consistent. Write at the same time every day—ideally right after you wake up. This helps you make it a routine.
  • Go beyond the obvious. Instead of “I’m grateful for food,” try “I’m grateful for the warm cup of coffee my partner made this morning.” Reflecting on the details arouses the good feelings associated with the things you are grateful for, hence, boosting your moods.
  • Revisit often. On tough days, leaf back through past entries. You’ll be amazed how quickly your mood lifts

2. Tell Someone “Thank You”

Don’t just think it, speak it. When a friend helps you, swap “Sorry for the inconvenience” with “Thank you so much for your help.” That shift not only uplifts them but rewires your own mindset toward appreciation.

The reason this works is because saying “thank you” sets a positive tone, even in imperfect moments, and keeps you, and your relationships rooted in appreciation.

3. Family Gratitude Rituals

In my home, we round off dinner by sharing one gratitude moment each. We take turns sharing what we are grateful for each day. It sparks laughter, unearths forgotten happy moments, and strengthens our bonds—especially now that my little one has mastered “thank you!”

How Gratitude Transforms Your Mood and Relationships

Gratitude is not just a solo practice that benefits you alone. It is a relationship supercharger. When you genuinely thank someone:

  • You create warmth. A heartfelt “Thank you for listening yesterday” deepens trust.
  • You cultivate kindness. People want to give more when they feel appreciated.
  • You model gratitude. Children learn from what we do. For example, my children have learned to say more “thank you” from how our family gratitude practices.

At a personal level, gratitude has the power of transforming your mood and improving the quality of your life. Imagine turning a day of “I can’t” into “I can,” just by jotting down three things you are thankful for. That’s the transformative power of gratitude.

Since I embraced daily gratitude, I have been able to:

  • Crush Comparison. The blessings in my life are top of mind so I focus on them instead of envying others.
  • Boost Productivity. A grateful mindset sharpens focus and motivation. Now, my mornings start with clarity, not chaos.
  • Defeat Fear and Anger. By focusing on positives, I am able to crowd out the negative and squash my fears. The prompt: “Identify a challenge you have overcome and write it down” has been particularly helpful for me in defeating fear. If you have overcome before, you can do it again!

Next Steps: Making Gratitude a Lifelong Habit

Research shows that writing down just three gratitude items each day can increase your happiness by up to 25% – That is not just an anecdote, it is science. 1, 2

I don’t know about you, but increasing my happiness levels is a pretty good incentive for cultivating a lifelong habit of gratitude. Here are some tips to help you make this a lifelong habit:

  1. Set a Daily Reminder: Block 5 minutes on your calendar. (I find it easier to do this either first thing in the morning or just before going to bed at night. However, find a time that works for you and stick to it.
  2. Use Prompts: Keep a reusable list of gratitude journaling prompts beside your journal for a quick start. (Click here for our list of daily gratitude journal prompts)
  3. Celebrate Progress: After 30 days, reward yourself—maybe with a special treat or something meaningful to you. You are investing in your wellbeing, that is worth celebrating.

  1. Wow! This is one of the best articles that I have read on gratitude. Good work! Keep it up. …….rushing to get my gratitude journal

    1. That is wonderful Alicia, gratitude is truly a powerful habit. Keep writing your gratitude journal and before long gratitude is going to become your default response to life. Life is definitely better when we are grateful.

  2. I have been actively working on being more grateful and grounded this year. So far its only been about a month, but I can already feel the difference! I still have yet to start an actual journal, I kind of just meditate on the thoughts while I’m doing my nightly yoga sequence. I love the idea of being able to reflect back upon that which you are grateful of (especially for those dark and emotional kind of days). I really enjoyed this post Debbie!

  3. Great article. I loved the Tony Robbins quote. That is an awesome one! I also loved the tip about changing “sorry” to “thank you” my husband and I started doing that a few weeks ago as well and it has really helped!!

    1. I love it too, it is what set me into motion on this gratitude journey and I am so thankful I did. I am happy you are changing sorry to thank you, it honestly does wonders for relationships. I just hope more people actually realize how powerful gratitude is and start implementing it in their own relationships for success. Thank you for affirming that, Emily.

  4. Gratitude changed my life and my overall perspective. Sometimes we get so caught up in what we’re chasing and wanting more that we don’t appreciate what’s in front of us and notice the gifts we have to feel good about. I write in a gratitude journal and It really helps me to focus on the positives. I think Oprah said “Be thankful for what you have you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have you will never ever have enough” …. give thanks! Great article!
